General Overview

This December the Sun is in Sagittarius until the 22, marking the Winter solstice.  Jupiter, the lord or ruler of Sagittarius, changes signs on 2 December.  Anytime a planet changes signs is a big deal because there are multiple changes behind the planet’s expression, interest, and agenda, which all shift in a moment, bringing on a new set of themes upon which we can reflect as we observe how these planetary energies connect to our lives.  Jupiter naturally rules the sign of Sagittarius, so has been happy at home for the past year.  For the next year, Jupiter will be in Capricorn, a sign where Jupiter struggles a little more to see the results of his generosity and abundance.  Many astrologers speak of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn and this is certainly a big topic for the world’s nations, but perhaps too big a topic for a monthly overview.  Jupiter changing signs means that there is going to be a different mode for Jupiter to bring about his significations, and it might be suggested that manifesting or enacting a vision will be hard-won.  Normally, Jupiter would feel a diminishing of inspiration and excitement in Capricorn, a sign ruled by Saturn.  However, in this particular transit of Jupiter through this sign, Saturn is also here.  This means that while Jupiter may experience problems, he will perceive (or impart upon) them to be “good” ones.  Jupiter does not jump for joy at the sight of responsibilities, but Jupiter is not abandoned by what he needs to accomplish the goal.  In fact, he is quite supported!  There are still responsibilities and a more downcast focus on general life circumstances, but Jupiter will continue to offer some ease or relief despite however limited he may be in doing so.  The added influence of Mars being at home in Scorpio adds to the power behind being action-oriented in December.  While this is not necessarily a time with the overflowing celebratory energy we often imagine December to be, having both Mars and Saturn at home and in a more-or-less neutral or indifferent relationship with each other does not add any harm, but rather can be helpful in fulfilling obligations so the time can be made for celebrating and relaxing when not working.

The first quarter Moon is in Pisces on 4 December and quite close to Neptune.  This first quarter Moon with its connection to Neptune and Jupiter has a really “big” theme.  The first quarter Moon is generally a time of action and movement, sometimes pushing against resistance in order to overcome it.  This first quarter Moon is visionary, inspired, and very much has to acknowledge how helpful it is to have one’s feet on the ground, and to not get too swept away by mental fantasies, but instead to continue with deliberate steps forward.

The full Moon is in Gemini on 12 December right in the middle of Venus’ unions with Saturn on the 11 and then Pluto on the 13, while Mars forms a flowing angle to Neptune.  The full Moon in Gemini highlights communication and messages.  It can bring things to completion through conversation, messages, email, news, and ideas that simply must be expressed in some way.  This can be a revelation of the mind, and with flowery Venus in contact with Saturn and Pluto, the revelation may be in the midst of something happening regarding love or a relationship or the way one relates to somebody or something else (even a tradition or institution).  The revelation of the Gemini full Moon is excellent timing for bringing people together for a party, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t seem as lively as expected.  A low-key gathering with fun word games would be a great outlet for this full Moon.

The waning quarter Moon starts to bring the Moon’s cycle to a definitive close as she enters her last quarter.  This will take place in Virgo on the 19, adding a dose of reality needed as Mercury will be squaring Neptune.  There might be things to let go of at this time- ideas, hopes, expecting a message or communication, etc.

The new Moon in Capricorn comes on 26 December, which begins the big Capricorn pile-up.  This is a time of really having a sense of being in the thick of the political climate.  That aside, this new Moon is a new cycle beginning around one’s responsibilities and duties to others.  How one can be more efficient and productive might be things to reflect upon at this time.  One’s relationship to the past, tradition, and the structures of one’s career or professional life can also be valuable aspects to reflect on now.  This new Moon is followed by the annual Sun-Jupiter conjunction which is definitely a joyous celebration, and something to surely look forward to.
